The Hollybush Inn
Denford Road,
Denford,
near Leek,
Staffordshire

Tel: 01538 371819What a lovely inn The Hollybush Inn is! It sits with the Caulden Canal to the front and the Leek branch of the canal to the rear, and is a favourite stopping point for people cruising the waters. Set in four acres of land, it was actually a cornmill before it became a pub. It is a whitewashed, picturesque building which dates originally from the early 17th century, with small-paned windows, a porch and an inn sign that incorporates a clock. The inside is delightful - everything an English inn should be. The floors are part quarry tiles, there are old oak beams, open fires, copper and brass ornaments, plenty of shire horse pottery on display, and comfortable seating. Children and pets are welcome. The restaurant area is roomy and well appointed, seating up to 20 people. You can also eat in the conservatory (which takes another 20 diners) plus you can eat elsewhere in the hostelry if you wish.
There is a printed menu and a specials board, and all
the dishes are prepared in the inn's own kitchens from
good fresh ingredients that are sourced locally if possible.
Try the speciality of the house - home made beef and ale
pie, or a dish that is famous in the area - the Hollybush
grill. To accompany your meal, you can choose from a selection
of wines, or you can order drinks from the bar. During
the summer months, there are always six real ales on offer,
and three in the winter, including Courage Best, Directors
and Burton . Also available are John Smiths Smooth, Theakston's
Mild, Fosters, Kronenberg, Strongbow and Guinness.
- Opening times: Open all day, every day

Think of a long, low building with stout walls of mellow stone. Think of small-paned windows, and hanging baskets and tubs that burst with colour in the summer months. Think also of the boat filled Calden Canal a few yards from its front door. That's The Boat Inn, a truly picturesque hostelry that speaks of a tradition of hospitality going back many years. It also has a charming setting, with a wooded area to the rear that frames it perfectly. The interior is equally as picturesque and inviting, with brick a fireplace, subdued lighting, comfortable furniture and a wealth of brass and copper ornaments dotting mantelpieces and shelves. Children are welcome, and under the personal supervision of Chris Massey and Andrew Monaghan, who have had many years's experience in the trade, it has become a popular place for a quiet, relaxing drink or a meal. In fact, it won the Restaurant Pub of the Year 2000 Award from the Sentinel newspaper, and has won other awards for its exterior.
Food is served in the 20 seat restaurant, in the bar, or in the summer months, outside in the beer garden. You can choose from a wide and varied menu. The dishes are all beautifully cooked on the premises, with the speciality of the house being juicy steaks with all the trimmings. Produce is sourced locally, and on Sunday there's a choice of roasts for your traditional Sunday lunch. You can have wine with your meal, or order a drink from the well stocked bar. Four real ales are available, Marstons Pedigree, Marstons bitter, Banks Original and a rotating guest ale. You can also order Mansfield Dark Mild, Fosters, Harp, Stella, Kronenberg, Guinness and Strongbow.
